As many of you can probably tell, I have a love for Jurassic Park. Back when I was a kid, I thought it was the most amazing fictional place in the world. It was magical, but grounded in science- and felt like a real place you could potentially visit. As a result, I’ve made a number of JP inspired designs over the years, including a few ‘closeup’ blueprints that showed off some of the more important aspects of the park. Most casual viewers may not realize that in the ‘expanded universe’ of Jurassic Park content, there are references to resorts, theme park rides and much more exciting locations on Isla Nublar. But we really don’t get much of an opportunity to see these things, much less understand them in the larger context of the island.

I’ve previously created a map to realize this full vision and I’m a pretty big fan of how it came out. It’s one of my favorites, even more so than the Jurassic World map I created. But recently I was contacted by a team of Minecraft world builders who wanted to use my map as inspiration for their own JP Minecraft map. Well, that in itself is pretty amazing and I was happy to help out. As it turns out however, they weren’t looking at my most recent maps, but rather the focused ‘closeups’, which I had completely forgotten I created! So it was a bit of a surprise on multiple accounts. But it also got me to thinking. There really are a lot of interesting locations on Isla Nublar, and perhaps there’s an opportunity here to create a new map, with a new visual style to showcase these elements.

One of the new-isn trends in the past couple years has been the rise of isometric graphics. I’ve never really played with them before, much less actually design my own graphics. But I liked the style and was inspired by Disney World style maps and decided I would have a go at it.

Work on the map has progressed slowly, as there’s been a bit of a learning curve, but the results have been fantastic! I’m really excited about filling out the rest of this map and really breathing a bit of life into this design. Keep tabs on future updates!
